Pablo in Mexico
When Pablo came with me to San Francisco, one of my main objectives was to have him try all of my favorites foods around town. You can then imagine when we went to Mexico! While we were there he was forsaken with 'Moctezuma's vengeance', but that didn't stop him from eating everything that was put in front of him! Here are a few snaps of all the things we had. Below are some descriptions! Enjoy!
1. Pablo insisted on a 'typical American meal', so we took him to Burger Joint for one of the best cheeseburgers in the Mission.
2-4. Our first days in San Francisco were spent doing the typical sightseeing, including Chinatown. I took Pablo to one of the US' oldest dim sum tea rooms: Hang Ah. I'd never been there before, but I'd recently seen a video about it on Facebook. We had some siu mai, pot stickers, fried wontons, shrimp dumplings, and chicken feet. Pablo struggled a bit with the chop sticks, but he eventually got a hang of them. Everything was delicious, although Pablo was a bit dubious about the chicken feet!
5. Pablo with a michelada and some tacos at Taqueria San Jalisco. He didn't like the michelada at all, but, as you'll see, it wasn't the last time he enjoyed some tacos.
6-7. Our road trip down to Disneyland with Yen and Enara started off with a stop at a Vietnamese food mall. I don't think there was a single sign in English. That's Pablo eating a waffle with coconut and eating some pho.
7,8. Korean barbecue in L.A.! I love Korean barbecue, but I don't get the chance to eat it enough. When Yen said she knew a good spot I was ecstatic, but I was a bit nervous about Pablo's reaction. He ended up loving it more than me! He can't stop talking about it. Hopefully there's something similar in Madrid!
9. At the Vietnamese market we bought some jackfruit and we spent the whole road trip snacking on it. I'd never tried it before and neither had Pablo. We both loved it so much that we bought one in San Francisco. Its super hard to open, but definitely worth the effort!
10. Pablo munching on a turkey leg in Santa Cruz.
11-13. Lobster! for a moment there we thought it was the lobster who was going to eat us!
14-16. Pablo arrives in Mexico! When we landed my cousins took us straight for tacos. We had some al pastor, chicharrón, and rajas.
17. Pablo is used to a light breakfast if any at all, so when he started having breakfast with my family, both in San Francisco and Mexico, he was more than overwhelmed! Freshly squeezed orange juice, quesadillas, chorizo, and fresh fruit (mango, papaya, mamey, etc.). Pablo quickly got used to starting the day with a heavy breakfast. I'm not surprised, it delicious!
18. There was a mix up in the order of my photos, so this is still in San Francisco! :o Of course I had to take Pablo to In n' Out, and he obviously became a fan. The other day he even had a dream that he was having a double double and some animal style fries!
19-23. Back to Mexico! Lorena took us to have brunch at Fisher's in La Condensa. They do typical Mexican dishes but with seafood. When you sit down they serve you a glass of one of the best seafood broths I've ever had. We ordered some shrimp molletes, octopus tostadas, a few different quesadillas, and of course, lots of drinks!
24. That same day we stopped at a food court where we shared a massive cocktail in a watermelon. I don't remember exactly what was in it, but it was super yummy and refreshing!
25,26. A trip to Mexico City isn't complete without a stop at El Moro for some churros and tortas. El Moro is one of the oldest places in the city to get some churros and its always packed no matter how hot it is. We were melting in there! You can also go to a stand right outside and get some sandwiches to eat inside.
27-33. Baby shower time! The main reason why we went to Mexico was because of my cousin's baby shower. Preparations started the day before and required an entire team of cooks! It was a feast fit for kings! There was mole, rice, rajas, cochinita pibil, beans, tacos de canasta, chicharrón, and scalloped potatoes with chorizo. And to drink we had fresh juices like lemon juice with chia seeds, and of course some beer. I think we all had at least two helpings! The dessert table was filled with typical Mexican candies, cupcakes, and cookies! I have some recipes up for some of the things we had that day like the beans, rice, mole, and rajas. As soon as I learn to make the other things I'll upload the recipes!
34,35. The nice weather called for a barbecue in the patio. There's my aunt heating up the grill with a hairdryer! We had steak, tostadas, chorizo, quesadillas and grilled peppers filled with cheese. Pablo even helped out making the tostadas!
36. This is a tostada, but I don't remember what was on it. I am certain, though. that it was delicious!
37. Back in San Francisco we went to Buena Vista Café for an Irish coffee. I'm not a huge fan, but the Buena Vista is a San Franciscan jewel.
38. On one of our last meals out, Yen took us to a Chinese hot spot. We had duck, crispy pork, soup, veggies, coconut shrimp, noodles, and much much more. I'm definitely asking Yen to take me back next time I'm in San Francisco.
Its safe to say that our trip to revolved around food. I thought it was going to be just Pablo trying new things, but along the way I discovered some pretty awesome stuff too. Eating your way through a city is definitely the best way to travel!
