Hi.

First Thoughts on the Thermomix

First Thoughts on the Thermomix

I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical when I first heard about the Thermomix. My mom tried explaining what it was and how it worked when my cousin Yen became a Thermomix consultant a few months ago. Apparently it was this bowl that would chop, grind, cook, knead, measure, etc. for you. Not to mention a mini built in computer that gives step by step instructions for each recipe. As someone who finds every step of cooking, from the chopping, to the seasoning, to the plating, as therapeutic,  it seemed at first glance as if the Thermomix's efficiency took the fun out of cooking. However, I was willing to give it a try once I was back home. A few weeks after my arrival Yen invited me to a consultant training session and it was actually amazing! I got to see the Thermomix first hand, play around with it, and we made a whole bunch of different dishes. I was really amazed by how versatile it was! I also found out that there are a series of country based recipe books in the form of USB chips of some sort. So let's say you're interested in Malaysian cooking. You simply order the recipe chip, insert it into your Thermomix and cook! And while you're not using the chip, it doubles as a magnet so you're sure not to lose it! Long story short, albeit my original skepticism, I'm proud to call myself a Thermomix fan! (Even more so after I found out it also makes some killer cocktails...)

Unfortunately I do not have a Thermomix in Edinburgh, but my parents recently invested in one, so hopefully once I'm back home I'll be able to experiment a bit more and do some collaborations with Yen!

So far the only thing I've made with the Thermomix was a cookies and cream cake for a friend's birthday. As I've mentioned in other posts, I love baking. Usually it takes me two days to make a proper birthday cake as I like to take my time and make sure everything comes out perfectly. However, I was in a bit of a rush and wouldn't have time to bake this cake the traditional way so I decided to try out the Thermomix. I used the Basics Cookbook sponge cake recipe and just added some chopped Oreos to the batter. It was ready in just a few minutes and I was able to make the frosting by hand as the Thermomix did its thing. Below are a few photos of the process and final result!

If you're interested in the Thermomix or have any questions please get in contact with Yen at ThermoZen.sf@gmail.com . I've also attached a link to her Facebook page where she also regularly posts updates on her own Thermomix adventures! (Just click the ThermoZen button below!)

Thanks!!!
