It all began one night in first year when I dreamt of enchiladas....
I woke up with a sudden craving for some chicken or cheese enchiladas, but unfortunately I couldn't teleport to the Mission or the streets of CDMX. I considered my options. I had come across some Mexican restaurants around Edinburgh, but they seemed too overpriced and I was afraid to leave disappointed (perhaps a bit prejudiced on my part). The local Tesco and Sainsbury's had "Mexican" cooking kits in their International sections which were certain to disappoint. I mean, can you trust guacamole that looks like green play-doh and has been sitting in a jar for who knows how long? My final option was to make the attempt myself despite not having a clue what really went into an enchilada sauce. My first step was to find a decent recipe to determine exactly what I might need. I don't remember the exact recipe I used, but just by reading the ingredient list I was nervous that I wouldn't find what I needed. I had never seen tomatillos at the supermarket, or proper tortillas for that matter. I began brainstorming alternatives for my dinner. Then again we are in the 21st century and we have a wonderful tool: Google!!! My search input: 'mexican produce edinburgh'. First result: Lupe Pintos.
This was the day my life in Edinburgh changed....
I had never been to that part of town before, so my trek to this heaven on earth was bound to be an adventure. I had given a quick glance to their produce list on their website and was excited, but boy was I not ready for what was in store (literally). My mouth dropped the moment I opened the door. They had EVERYTHING!!!!! and I was in love.
Having such an awesome place nearby with such a variety of products (not just Mexican, but also Jamaican, Spanish, Thai, etc.) became a source of inspiration. Of course most of the products are imported so price wise it may not seem like the best option, but the excitement of cooking something delicious and as authentic as you can get is absolutely priceless. Honestly, just the experience going there is amazing. Each time I visit I discover a new gem. Once in second year I let out a small shriek when I saw they had Jarritos. Just recently I spotted patxaran and Pulparindo. What more can you ask for?? Thanks to this place I've been able to not only bring home goodies, but it has also encouraged me to cook meals that I would've never fathomed cooking: tamales, enchiladas, pupusas, and my own tortillas. Not to mention that the shop owner is super nice and totally passionate about what he does. Soon I will post more about these projects!
Long story short, when you're away from home or don't have direct access to those foods you love, don't be intimidated. I'm lucky to have a place like Lupe Pintos nearby, but I'm sure they aren't the only fans of international products. Get out there and you'll find what you least expect where you least expect it!
